Buffalo Check Desktop & Upcycled Jewelry Holders
July 13, 2017
This simple farmhouse-style desk was in my youngest daughter's room. I recently gave it some personality!
First, I painted just the desktop with two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin. Next, I positioned my *Old Sign Stencils' buffalo check stencil in the center (measure) of the desktop. I taped it securely with blue painters tape.
I then moved the stencil up and down and did above and below the center stencil first, and then completed each side in three steps. It's not hard to use this stencil but make sure that you aren't just lining up the diagonals correctly. You must double check to see that the open painted squares line up and that the solid stencil square rows line up.
I messed up a couple squares and was lucky enough to wipe the error off with a damp cloth and re-stencil.
I used 220 grit sandpaper to lightly distress the desktop.
I then decided to add some faux distressing with my FolkArt Layering Wood Block. More details on the layering block can be found here.
I sealed the desktop stenciling with Varathane Clear Matte Soft Touch Polyurethane, a water based product.
The vintage ice cream chair was painted and stenciled in a previous post.

The photo frame, also painted with Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin, has necklace and bracelet hooks inside (it was heavily discounted at a gift shop due to finish damage), and I made the cream picture frame jewelry holder from leftover Lincane Aluminum Sheet in goldtone and Glazing Push Points .
The stencils add so much personality to this little corner!
This little three tiered brass dish also from the thrift shop was spray painted with two coats Rust-Oleum Chalked Spray Paint in Chiffon Cream/Off White .
It was then stenciled with the word "RINGS" using Momenta Alphabets and Numbers Adhesive Stencil and Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Walnut Noyer . I then used my layering block around all the edges of the tiers, and sealed the holder with Chalked Sealer/Wax Topcoat Spray
Finished project!
And this jewelry holder is a hand towel stand that got the same paint and layering block treatment as the ring dish.
I am working on more updates from this bedroom too!
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.
