Thrift Shop Vintage Child's Metal Folding Chair Christmas Upcycle

December 10, 2017

I found this little child's vintage metal folding chair at the thrift shop this week.

It's not the original paint job.  It's been spray painted red, but the spray paint has some dings and chips and scratches and rust, so it seems vintage.
When I first saw it priced at $4, I thought of Becky's red chair with stenciled snowflakes that I had admired on the Beyond the Picket Fence blog.

But I returned to my Christmas 2017 theme, BUFFALO CHECKS!

So I pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils Buffalo Check Stencil once again!

I centered the stencil on the seat of the chair.

Then I taped off the raised rim edge of the seat.  This will keep the stencil in the indentation.

I used Ceramcoat Select Multi-Surface Paint in Black to stencil on the buffalo checks.  The multi-surface paint works well on metal or glass.

As you can see, I had to move the stencil over to bring the stencil over to the right and left edges.

I then sanded the buffalo check stenciling VERY lightly with 220 grit sandpaper.  I didn't want the stenciling to look brand new.

As a northern Minnesota resident, I also have some deer stencils in my stash.  This one is by Just a Trace.  I purchased it locally at a craft shop.

I stenciled the deer on the top back of my metal chair.

Of course, I think it's adorable!  The best $4 I've spent in a long time.

I love vintage metal.  I love chairs.  I love red.  And I love buffalo checks.

The multi-surface paint, once cured, is pretty durable.  But I may spray some Krylon Satin Finish Spray Enamel on the seat and chair back for extra protection from scratches or if I place the chair outside.

I can use the little chair inside or on my covered patio outside.

This is why I stop at thrift shops often.  If you stop once or twice a month, you would never find a chair like this.

Great finds go fast.  But if you stop 3-4 or 5 times per week you will find some neat items.

This is my December favorite find!

  1. Love, Love, Love this! I came across 2 wooden little kids chairs at a thrift store back in early October and I painted them up in red and black buffalo check. I also had an lid metal folding chair in my garage, and I painted it up also in the buffalo check. I stenciled welcome on the back though. I like your idea with the deer!
