Re-Purposed Cabinet Door Laundry Room Sign
February 28, 2018
When I was in our local Menards yesterday, (a big box home improvement center) buying Rustoleum Chalked Paint in Chiffon Cream, I noticed a stack of square cabinet doors on the counter.
I asked the sales person about them, and she said they were display samples for sale for $5 each. I picked out this maple one, that is pretty close to my kitchen cabinets, and one other one.
Why I took the matching one is super crazy because if my husband would say YES, my cabinets would be painted in off white overnight.
The back of the cabinet doors had cabinet pricing materials.
If I were to tell you that I go overboard at times, would you believe me? Like with buffalo checks? With junk in the flower garden? With flowers in the flower garden?
Yes, I went back for more.
I have had a six day break from my sales job at the furniture store. Usually I get so much done when I get a good break from work.
I do a lot of projects, and I clean my house from top to bottom. This time, not a lot of projects done, and NO housecleaning done. Too late now. Back to work tomorrow.
I got so distracted. These cabinet doors received priority over other projects. I couldn't wait to get two coats of Rustoleum Chalked Paint in Chiffon Cream on the maple one.
Once dry, I gave the edges and center of the cabinet a sanding with 220 grit sandpaper to expose stain on the edges and knock down any brush marks.

This WASH DRY FOLD REPEAT stencil is one of the FolkArt Die Cut Paper Stencils Phrases (26-Pack).
Since the entire stencil would not fit on the raised center portion of the cabinet door, I cut the sides down making it easier to get it centered.
Once I had it centered, I taped it to the cabinet door with blue painter's tape.

I stenciled the letters with Ceramcoat Black Craft Paint.
Some of these cheaper stencils have really big gaps in the letters, that force me to take a fine liner brush like Royal Brush Crafter's Choice Liner Brush in Size 20/0 with the black craft paint and close the letter gaps free hand.
I did some more sanding with the 220 grit sandpaper over the stencils and edges. Then I sealed the door with Varathane Crystal Clear Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish.
The knob I used on my cabinet door is a salvaged breadbox knob. I asked my husband to add it to my door while I went to the groomer with my dog.
Usually, I want some screws to show on top because I'm going rustic, so he screwed right though the top of the knob!

Do you remember my wooden sleeve ironing board shelf? And the miniature irons?
I'm loving door #1!
I'm going to work it into my laundry room decor.
Do you go OVERBOARD sometimes?
