Kitchen Fairy Garden
May 13, 2012
Fairy gardens have become so popular. I at first thought the idea was kind of goofy, but I have warmed up to it a bit, and decided to plant a "kitchen fairy garden".
I had this rectangular barrel planter...
It was just sitting on the deck today. Unplanted. Unplanned.
I thought about making it into a fairy garden. After I checked out the internet "fairy gardens", I found that I had no little cottage, no little fencing, no little fairies, and finding the "fairy" stuff today in my small town would be impossible.
I decided I did have some kitchen junk to make a "kitchen fairy garden". (if there is such a thing)
I had some vintage kitchen utensils, ricers, pots, a scoop, pot lids, and a muffin tin. Also some dollar store stones.
So I purchased (and dug up) what I thought could be considered "fairy" garden plants. Low growing and small blossomed.
My plants included: wooly and creeping thyme and hen and chicks from my gardens, and I purchased ornamental oregano, and a trailing thyme, alyssums, pony tail grass, moonbeam viola, and a great pink ring bacopa.
I can't wait to see how it turns out when the plants fill in and bloom!
I will keep you posted!

Carlene: You have a great imagination. That is the perfect kitchen fairy garden. It looks so cute and I think it only needs one thing. I have a little iron fairy that sits on the ground. After being outside for awhile she has turned the most beautiful shade of rust!! I've seen them in alot of shops and they are not very expensive and she would be just the right size. You really need her!! She would look right at home sunning on one of the rocks. Happy Shopping..Happy Mother's Day..Judy
ReplyDeleteIt's DARLING!!!! A kitchen fairy garden...you are so imaginative! I don't have one yet either but it sounds like fun. Like you...I have no fairies but you know the saying...."build it and they will come"! i bet you'll have fairies by tomorrow! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? This is where all the fairies are going to gather to enjoy a festive meal or two. maybe even a party! They know a good thing when they see one and this is it! I have been reading two books about the fairies. They like kind folks and you are one..

How cute. I love it. Did you see mine that I posted pictures of. They are so much fun. I want to make another one with things I already have at home. SOme of the things are expensive when you buy them just for the garden.

Very creative use of what you have. I know all about not being able to find things you need in a small town. Love your metal cabinet, too. I've been telling my daughter to start a fairy garden with Finley, but maybe I'll start Grammy's fairy garden instead. I wonder if I can find mini waterproof sock monkeys? :@
ReplyDeleteAdorable - the fairies must be in heaven here! Love the vintage kitchen touches and it will look fabulous when it's all filled in!

Very cute! I've been wanting to make one of these, you may have just inspired me to; dive in and get r done! Thanks for the inspiration! I'm visiting from Debbiedo's Newbie party, and I'm now following here~
ReplyDeleteSuper cute idea! Great way to use old kitchen items. Hope you have a terrific week!
ReplyDeleteLovely. Much nicer than a fairy garden in my opinion. I actually have a large rectangular pot with pink petunias and a blue willow plated broken in half and a fine china rose cup broken in half. I love it. I first saw this idea about 25 years ago. My great great aunty born in 1900 used borken china in her garden beds amongst the flowers and low clumping plants and it always stuck in my head. I usually do it wherever we live as a tribute in part to her and the fact that I just plain like it.
ReplyDeleteThis is really fun!! LOVE vintage things! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove it ! I have a lot of red and wite pans too. I especially love the hen & chicks in the muffin tim :) I used my red and white pans in an outdoor display also . Here is a link if you want to check it out :)http://makinghome-dawn.blogspot.com/2012/05/welcome-to-my-gnome.html

ReplyDeleteThat is just adorable. Tinkerbelle would feel right at home (you know she tinkered with all sorts of found objects).
ReplyDeleteOh Carlene this is the sweetest fairy garden I have ever seen! What a great reuse of everyday items? It's as though the fairies saw them and made them into the homes! I would really love it if you would share this at my party You're Gonna Love It Tuesdays!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your fairy garden! I've been wanting to make one, too.

ReplyDeleteHi, Nice to meet you! I am blog hopping, and so glad I came across your blog! Now this is just too cute!! I did a post on "miniature gardens". You have to stop over and see. Also there is a link, where you can buy the little mini stuff, and even fairies. I really like your idea, so fun and creative. I have some vintage stuff too, my moms colander, and cupcake pan. I think I will look for some other ones though, as I don't want to ruin them. I love the pot lids in there too! I wish I could find one of them like yours. Where did you find them? I have also seen them hung on the wall, used as dish towel holder. That is what I would like to do with mine. Would love to have you come and visit me too! Now, I am going to check out the rest of your blog!

Carlene, you never seem to run out of good ideas. Your kitchen fairy garden is cute and imaginative. That half barrel was perfect to use for the garden and the accessories. Thanks for sharing at Your Cozy Home Party. ----------Shannon
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that! I've seen the fairy gardens on Pinterest, but haven't talked to anyone who has actually done it. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love this! The little container on the right corner makes a perfect fairy house. You could turn the lid in the center over & fill it with water for a fairy pond. I hope the plants fill in well for you.
ReplyDeletei LOVE it - the use of the muffin pan is such a cool, inventive idea - I'm putting together a mini garden here at my cottage & hope you'll come over & see it in a few days! xo
