Outdoor This and That 7 - My Bike
August 01, 2012
Last summer I bought this vintage bike at the Tattered Angel, a local shop. The entire bike was spray painted white!
It was in July, so most of the greenhouses were pretty picked over. I purchased a plastic terra cotta oval pot with a purple surfina petunia in it. It did well for a while but I think this area did not get enough full sun.
This photo is from 2011:
The next set of photos were taken this morning.
Instead of just plunking an oval potted plant in the basket again this year, I bought a coco liner and filled it with soil, and added part shade plants like coleus, New Guinea impatiens, regular impatiens, and vinca vine. The vinca vine is very robust but the flowers are sort of sluggish. Not sure why.
See what I mean not too many blossoms!
I have sedum and impatiens growing around and under the bike. Did you see a lady bug?
This little lady bug used to be my bowling ball. I had my friend from the Tattered Angel paint this for me from a photo I found on the internet.
This is a strawberry pot.
The impatiens in the ground, in the strawberry pot and in the basket are blooming profusely but not the bicycle basket! Go figure!

I'm so envious of your bike, I want one too! My impatients aren't doing well either, it's just too darn hot for them. I adore your ladybug bowling ball, to darn cute. Glad you like my vignette!

ReplyDeleteCarlene: I've said it before, I'm sure, but I'll say it again. It must be such a treat for someone to drive up to your house. There is so much to see there and all so pretty and well maintained..Happy Wednesday..Judy
ReplyDeleteThat is so darn darling right down to that ladybug bowling ball.
ReplyDeleteI love the whole garden vignette, but that bowling ball is darling! I saw a bowling bowl painted to look like a ladies head on Pinterest. xo
ReplyDeleteThat bike is wonderful! It makes for such a great display. The ladybug bowling ball couldn't be cuter or more clever.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute yard and the bike gives a bit of whimsy. Love it and the flowers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful garden and the bike is so perfect painted white. The bowling ball is such a cute touch. Thanks so much for stopping by with your comment, I really don't know how many cloches I have. I have an addiction to them. I love them in the house and in the garden too! There's something about how the sunlight reflects off them. I'm your newest follower.

Too cute!!! Do you take the bike in when Winter comes? I love the bowling ball. I didn't recognize it as a bowling ball until you told me! She did a great job. Do you think that the coco mat dries out faster than the other containers maybe? It is truly a darling outdoor "vignette"! If you lived closer I'd hire you! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat is great! I love that. I read somewhere that it seems easy to paint a bike like that, but that it's actually A LOT of work, so very cool that it was done for you! It's in a perfect spot and looks so cute. Not many blooms, but the plants look so healthy. I love the crawling vine. Pretty! I loved the lady bug as soon as I saw it, had no idea it was bowling ball until scrolling down as I read. too cute!
ReplyDeletehow beautiful!! the bike is such a perfect touch to your landscaping...looks wonderful!!

So cute, even with less blossoms!

What a great vintage lawn ornament. I love the ladybug bowling ball too. I have one by a local artist who covered the bowling ball with a mosaic tile design. Great recycling!

Like your bike as a planter:0 And your ladybug is hard to overlook!
ReplyDeleteLove your sweet old bike!
ReplyDeleteCarlene, that ladybug bowling ball is the cutest thing! I had not seen one done like that but I'm going to have to make one. Your flowers in your bicycle basket are so pretty. You may want to keep the vinca in that basket. One year I had it growing everywhere and it took a long time to pull it all out!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea with the bike. Looks fabulous in your garden.
ReplyDeleteThe ladybug is too cute!! Recycle!!!!

I love you Bike and I am too very jealous... The vinca is very happy I have the same problem where it takes over in the pot but I love it.. right now for central Florida the impatiens are disappearing because of our high heat and humidity.. Your impatiens look healthy though so I would not worry... all in all I love your blog and your posts.. you have a lovely garden and home...
ReplyDeleteI am so Jealous too of the bike, I love it .. You have a wonderful garden and that is the cutest bowling ball lady bug I have ever seen.. I love your Blog, d garden, and Home. Everything is lovely !
ReplyDeleteA gorgeous garden, Carlene! The bike is charming, and I love the lady bug bowling ball--how clever. One idea for your flowers in the bicycle basket is to use a fertilizer that is higher in potassium than nitrogen. Nitrogen causes plants to produce leafy foliage, but potassium helps the plants to flower better. Having too much nitrogen in the fertilizer mix can inhibit the flowers from blooming, but cause all that vinca foliage to really take off. Take care, and have a great weekend--supposed to be a scorcher here in the Pacific Northwest!
ReplyDeleteThat ladybug .... so adorable ... Love it !
