A Junk Gardener's Window Box

My projects starts with this piece of a desk or a bedroom chest that I purchased for $12.

I painted it with Annie Sloan Pure White Chalkpaint, distressed it with sandpaper and sealed it with water based Varathane poly. I applied two coats.

I covered the two little holes with Hobby Lobby wooden medallions.

Now, where to put it? Under a window, right? Hubby said "no". We have steel siding so he didn't want to hang this very heavy window box on the house.

Next comes a great find for $15 and 25% off! A perfectly chippy, white picket fence section.

So we attached the window box to the picket fence with 3 long and large bolts, and I planted it as follows:

1. Luscious Citrus Blend Lantana

2. Yellow Marguerite Daisy

3. Margarita Sweet Potato Vine

4. Angel Face Blue Angelonia

5. Pomegranite Punch Superbells

6. Luscious Citrus Blend Lantana

The window box was just planted today. I will share it again after it has time to fill out.

UPDATE: Since my window box was originally a piece of furniture, I should have reinforced it more before hanging and planting.

After having been planted for just a week, the wood in my window box started cracking.

So screws have been added in front and back and more nails on the bottom. Oh well, live and learn! I still love it, cracks and all! At first I thought I would touch up the screws with more paint, but decided it's a JUNK garden window box. It's fine!

Great idea to make that into a windowbox! If I'm putting something I painted with chalk paint outside, do I have to poly it then? I just waxed it for right now, but it doesn't seem exactly waterproof.
