Authentically Chippy Distressed Adirondack Chair with Fusion Mineral Paint
May 11, 2015
Who doesn't like the look of a chippy white picket fence? My project today with Fusion Mineral Paint features one of my patio Adirondack chairs painted in "Casement" white. Casement is a warm white, but not too creamy. My wet distressing technique on the chair's slats reminds me of a chippy white picket fence!
Here is a "before" photo of my Adirondack chairs. I have had these white cedar chairs for about 15 years. They have been stained with a caramel colored exterior stain.
The Adirondacks are well protected on my covered patio. I considered using Ultra Grip from Fusion Mineral Paints before painting, to get the best adhesion over the stain, but decided I wanted a distressed finish. Fusion Mineral Paint covers quite well in just one coat, and seldom requires any prep. One coat wasn't quite enough, so I applied a second coat of paint after about two hours of drying time.
I let the chairs dry overnight before distressing due to high humidity and rainy weather. In the past, I have distressed the paint shortly after the paint dried with very good results.
I like the wet distressing method with Fusion Mineral Paints. For light distressing, I simply rub a wet terry cloth rag over the edges of the piece, but for these heavier, chippy distressed edges, I used a square piece of a Dawn Scouring Pad. I wet the pad, and rubbed it down the slat or board edges to start the jagged distressing line. After the line has been started with the scouring pad, many times a wet terry rag will continue the line all the way across. I like this technique because the paint looks like it has been chipped off and not sanded off.
The distressing is somewhat uneven, with some edges more heavily distressed than others.
I love white painted furniture! Neutral pillows OR cushions or bright colors work too!

Lovely makeover. The chair really comes to live in white. And I must try that wet distress technique, it is new to me, but it looks great.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Looks like chairs from the East Coast, not Northern Minnesota!
ReplyDeleteI visited the Fusion Minerals page, what a great array of color shades to work with! I have several pieces similar to what is shown, and I love the way they show the color in the muffin pans. I do need to paint a small half-circle side table and a padded bench, soon. I do like the wet distress look too, different than the plain sanded look. By the way, I also have 2 of those 20 gallon Red Wing crocks shown with your beautiful chairs
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike, Carlene :) I love how your chairs turned out!
ReplyDeleteI am so ready to come sit on your porch!
ReplyDeleteLove your chairs--I have a set of vintage wooden deck chairs that need painted. I am thinking they would look good in Casement White, just like yours! I will definitely be trying your distressing technique too! Would love to win this giveway!

(And even if I don't I'm still going to try it on the bench-lol!) Haven't seen the scouring pads so those are now on the grocery list too-thank you.
ReplyDeleteHow pretty! I love what you did with your Adirondack chairs! I'm trying to think what project I might like to paint with it -- maybe a storage piece we're having made for the foot of our bed.

ReplyDeleteThanks again for a chance to win!!
Looks beautiful and I just love that pillow too!
ReplyDeleteThe Fusion Mineral Paint website is as beautiful as the projects that feature. It makes me want to repaint everything in my home. But the project that most needs help is an old wooden gate that I've donated to our local library. It will be used in the renovation of the library's entrance, which includes salvaged garden items. The gate will be a backdrop for our rose bush with the most beautiful blooms. This project would make a great promo for Fusion's paints to be used in a community project!
ReplyDeleteThat's gorgeous! And I spy a crock table!!! Genius. I love crocks. Now I need some adirondack chairs ;)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Jamie
I'd like to try Bedford on a beat up cedar chest that needs a fresh make-over.
ReplyDeleteI would paint my night stand with their Ash paint
