Minnesota Floor Puzzle Piece Re-Purposed As A Christmas Tree Ornament
December 05, 2017
This is a piece from a United States Floor Puzzle I found at a local thrift shop.
It's not wood. It's pressed paper, but since it's a floor puzzle piece, it's a nice size for an ornament.
The puzzle has been well used and some of the pieces have been taped together.
First I painted the back and front of my Minnesota puzzle piece with Dutch Boy Chalky Paint in Antiquated Lace. I purchased the chalk paint knock off at our local Menards. It has to be mixed.
I just had a dab of paint left in the bottom of my paint can, and it was a little gritty. Once I give my puzzle piece a quick sanding with 150 grit sandpaper, it will be smooth.
Next I pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils Buffalo Check Stencil.
I LOVE this stencil! Perfect for Minnesota.
Since my ornament is going on a pretty neutral tree, I used Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Trail Tan for stenciling on my Antiquated Lace base coat.
I used my FolkArt Layering Wood Block with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Walnut Noyer to faux distress the edges of the puzzle piece ornament.

I drilled three holes in the puzzle piece.
One for the ornament hanger, and the bottom two to attach a Spare Parts Tag Holder from Hobby Lobby.
The Spare Parts tag holders are actually made for paper crafts so I was able to use the brads included.
When I use the tag holders with wooden projects, I use nails or screws.
I sealed the paint and stencils with Minwax Paste Finishing Wax in Natural, applied with a paper towel. This wax is pretty easy to apply and will be good enough to seal an ornament.
I then created a tag on Picmonkey, and printed it on card stock with my inkjet printer.
I used an ornament wire through the top whole for hanging.
I think it's a fun state pride idea for a Christmas tree ornament! It's certainly unique, and it includes my favorites, Minnesota, a buffalo check stencil and metal tag holders!
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.
I can make many more state ornaments too!
These bookends were done with the same paint, stencils, and tag holders, here.
