Thrift Shop Hinged Box Upcycle with Paint and Stencils
December 15, 2017
I found this little box at the thrift shop last week for $2.99.
The finish is very scratched and etched with names.
The entire inside is lined with metal, so it wasn't a jewelry box.
I think it would make a great desktop box for mail or envelopes or desktop supplies.
After cleaning up the box with soap and water, I painted it inside and out with Zinsser Water Base Primer White. Some of these older stains and varnishes bleed through chalk paint.
Next I brushed on Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. Old White is my very favorite Annie Sloan color. I use it a lot for items I plan to keep for my own use.

After the chalk paint dried, I sized up my buffalo check stencil from *Old Sign Stencils on the box lid.
I just love this stencil!
I used Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Trail Tan for the buffalo check pattern. I think it is close to the color of burlap.
The inside is clean and painted, and I faux distressed the edges of the lid and box bottom with the FolkArt Layering Wood Block and Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Walnut Noyer.
I still love the layering block!

The B monogram Artminds stencil is from Michael's.
I stenciled the monogram with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Black. I used Dreamweaver stencil brushes for my project.
I sealed the paint and stenciling with Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.
It's cheaper than Annie Sloan Clear Wax, and I think, easier to use.

Everything is BETTER with buffalo checks!
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.
This box will join other projects I recently completed for my desk and desk hutch:

I agree with Pam! That little tree caught my attention...did you make it too? Always love getting your emails with new projects. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love that buffalo checks stencil as well. You really know how to use paint and stencils to transform so many things.
ReplyDeleteLove the box re-do. I have a wooden jewelry organizer belonging to my teenage grand-daughter that needs a paint job to wipe out the fairies on it. This is a perfect idea. Especially like the colors and the initial stencil.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
