Garage Sale Piano Bench Upcycle with Buffalo Checks/Antiques Stencils

January 19, 2018

I purchased this piano bench at a garage sale last summer.

It is structurally in great shape but the maple 1960ish finish is scratched and chipped.  It's going to get a makeover.
I painted the piano bench with two coats of Dutch Boy Chalky Finish Paint mixed as True Black.  I then lightly distressed the edges with 150 grit sandpaper, and smoothed the center areas with 220 grit sandpaper.

Then I pulled out my *buffalo check stencil from Old Sign Stencils.  I centered it both lengthwise and width wise, and taped it in place with blue painter's tape.

My checks were stenciled with Ceramcoat Buttercream acrylic craft paint.

Next I moved the stencil left, making sure to line up the checks perfectly.

After the stenciling was completed, I brushed on a coat of Varathane Crystal Clear Water based poly in satin.

The piano bench could easily serve as a small coffee table!

Complete with magazine/newspaper/remote storage!

I always leave the checks somewhat opaque.

I love it!

But not so fast, this project is not finished.

After I painted the inside of the piano bench, I pulled out my *Antiques & Collectibles stencil from Old Sign Stencils to stencil the inside cover.

The stencil was just the right size for the inside cover.

Now to fill it with some antiques and collectibles!

Do you remember this chair back photo holder project?

The clothespins hold photos of my great grandma and great grandpa.

I can't decide if I like it better closed as a table or open as a display piece.

What do you think?

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.

  1. Hi Carlene. Two different looks - instant decoration changes - love the buffalo check on top of the lid - and then the surprise of the Antique sign inside the lid. You spark ideas.

  2. Way to go Carlene! Love this makeover! As I scrolled, I wondered if you would use the fringe stencil. :) Love the bench open or closed. :) Classic colors as well. Thank you for the inspiration and eye happiness to see this.

  4. Love it both ways -what a great idea .... piano benches like this are often found at antique and flea markets -you should be a contestant on the show Flea Market Flip.

  7. I couldn't love this more if I tried! Love how it morphs from a display case to side table! Really clever and both designs equally beautiful! Totally smitten with the inside as it's just such a cool way to display collectables.
