I purchased this firkin at a local thrift shop for $10. I never knew these wooden style buckets were called firkins until I found another one last summer at a yard sale.
This firkin is a sewing basket. It has small dowels to hold thread spools inside. I think it had legs at one time because there were metal leg brackets on the underside. I removed them.
My first thought was to paint the firkin with a new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint called Chateau Gray. I gave it one coat when it dawned on me that I may have a pedestal in my junk stash to add to the bottom of the firkin.
Sure enough I found this pedestal in the garage. I had purchased it at a rummage sale as well. It had been painted mint green already.
It had a small round table that I had unscrewed and removed. My husband located the table top in the garage as well.
The top of the pedestal was sawed off to make the firkin on the pedestal 22" tall. (Side table height.)
The firkin was attached with screws to the pedestal's table top.
Now I need to paint it all one color to unify the piece.
I chose Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin. It's a warm gray beige. Taupe.
After two coats of Algonquin, I stenciled on an ornate scroll design I purchased at Hobby Lobby. I used Ceramcoat Select Multi-Surface Paint in Ivory to stencil on the scroll. Ceramcoat Select is more durable even if not sealed.
I also very lightly faux distressed the firkin's edges with my FolkArt Layering Wood Block and FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint in Real Brown.
I plan to place my firkin pedestal table next to an easy chair in one of our bedrooms.
I love decorating my home with one of a kind decor!
With Fusion Mineral Paint, a wax or poly topcoat isn't necessary, unless a super tough topcoat is desired. (Like a kitchen table)
I love it!
My other firkin project instructions are here.

Great idea!
