Vintage Playing Card Holder Repurposed As Pet Photo Display
January 24, 2018
I purchased this little vintage playing card holder at a thrift shop.
It was not a run of the mill find, so I purchased it!
This was once a tall primitive candle stick.
It had been cut off rather sloppily.
Actually I have three of these prim candle holders in three colors and three different sizes.
I cut all of them off one Christmas.
A small wood shim was added to the tops with a screw.
I used them to make a trio of funnel Christmas trees in a crate.
The funnel trees were just temporary. I took them apart after Christmas. I have a funnel collection, and I couldn't bring myself to put screws or nails in them.
I cut the candle stick off flush, and attached it to my playing card holder with a dowel wood screw.
Dowel screw.
(two sided screw).
Not knowing if the card holder or burgundy candlestick would bleed through my white chalk paint, I brushed on one coat of flat black paint first. If I was super concerned I would have used Zinsser Shellac first and/or primer.
Next I brushed on two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in my favorite white "Old White".
I did an all over sanding of the piece with 220 grit sandpaper, paying particular attention to distressing the edges and smoothing any paint brush marks. Both the black base coat and a few areas of wood show through my chalk paint.
I stenciled on a paw print with a stencil I purchased at Hobby Lobby. I used black paint for the paw print!
I waxed the whole piece with Minwax Paste Finishing Wax in Natural.

I added a Tim Holtz Metal LOVE token with jute to the top finial.
I just love these Tim Holtz embellishments available at both Amazon and craft shops.
This is wallet sized photo of my dog, Fergie.
He's an interesting looking little dog. Part Japanese Chin and part Maltese with a very small head, very long skinny body and very long legs. Weighing more than the breeder said he would. His hair is black, gray and white with just a bit of brown around the muzzle.
I think it was a fun makeover.
I thought adding the candlestick base and getting the photo holder up off the table added interest to the piece!

This is truly outstanding, Carlene! I love what you have created and those funnel trees are adorable.
