Buffalo Check Your Valentine's Day Decor
February 10, 2018
My latest project begins with two unlikely thrifted items, a cutting board and a coaster container. (No coasters included).
I am not 100% positive that the item on the right is a cutting board. I have run across these before. They appear to be cutting boards but it seems like they have been poly-ed or varnished and have a shine.
The wooden coaster container with the ceramic duck on top was 25 cents. Both items were under $1.
I chose to remove the duck, so I placed a hot blow dryer on the duck until the glue loosened up enough to pry it off.
Next I painted both the cutting board and coaster holder with two coats of Chalked Paint in Chiffon Cream.
I like Rustoleum Chalked Paint. It is a cheaper version of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Next I stenciled "love" on the oval indented portion of the coaster holder (where the duck was) with Momenta Alphabets and Numbers Adhesive Stencil and black Ceramcoat acrylic craft paint.
I had to crowd the letters a bit to get them to fit.

I stenciled the cutting board with *Old Sign Stencils buffalo check stencil on a diagonal with Deco Art Americana Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge.
When I am stenciling on a smaller piece, I prefer to use the buffalo check stencil on a diagonal.
Next, I sanded both pieces with 220 grit sandpaper, particularly on the edges.
I attached the coaster holder to the cutting board with wood screws from the back and added a sawtooth hanger and 1/2" chicken wire to the hole with staples. 1/2" is perfect for small projects.
I sealed my project with Deco Art Creme Wax. I had some on hand. It is water based brush on wax.
So my project can hang on a wall.
My project can hold faux florals or paper Valentines too.
It can also sit on a counter or shelf.
You can buffalo check any HOLIDAY!
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.

That is so cute Carlene! I never would of thought to pair them together like that. I know I have at least one coaster holder it my thrift stash. Thanks for sharing another fun project.
ReplyDeleteThat is just too cute...the marriage of 2 objects I wouldn’t think of putting together in a million years!
