Thrift Shop Vintage Wooden Shelf Upcycle with Paint & Houndstooth Stencil
February 01, 2018
This is the third wooden item that I purchased at the Bemidji, Minnesota, Goodwill.
It's a country/colonial wall shelf.
It's not too deep.
First I painted the shelf with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite.
It took two coats. I sanded the front of the back of the shelf with 220 grit sandpaper before stenciling it.
I found this houndstooth stencil from Show-Offs
at Hobby Lobby in Bemidji, Minnesota. I think it was $2.99.
I didn't see this stencil on their website.
It fit pretty darn close to the back of the shelf.
I did tape off one row of hound's teeth at the top!
I stenciled the hound's tooth pattern with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Buttercream. I used the smallest brush in the Dreamweaver Brush Set to stencil the pattern.
I used 220 grit sandpaper to LIGHTLY sand the stencils.
I wet distressed the edges and sides/bottom of the piece with an old Tee Shirt, then sealed the chalk paint and stencils with Varathane Crystal Clear Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish.
Now to add a Hobby Lobby label tag! I love adding these to my upcycles! I didn't use the brads enclosed, I used short nails to attach this tag to my shelf.
I used the "Coffeebreak" font in Picmonkey to add a "Farmhouse" cursive paper label.
I also tied on a jute string to the hole.
So here is one version of my new upcycled shelf!
I love it this way.
But I REALLY love it horizontally!
I flipped the "Farmhouse" tag and set the shelf on a stool. It now becomes a container vignette!
I think this is more fun than wall decor. Add one or two fun items.
Set this on your counter, a table, a shelf.
Either way it's a winner!
An upcycled country thrift shop shelf vertically!
And the upcycled country thrift shop shelf horizontally!
