Adding LEGS To A Vintage Slaw Cutter To Make a Farmhouse Style Kitchen Shelf
March 13, 2018
The vintage slaw cutter on the right was a recent thrift shop find for $4. (I already have two of these, but what's one more?)
My other two slaw cutters hang on the wall with magnets and old photos, but I have a different plan for this one.
I had a 1" x 36" wooden dowel on hand.
You can usually purchase square dowels in various sizes at craft shops or at a home improvement center.
Four - 4 1/2" pieces of the 1" square dowel were cut on the chop saw.
I used 100 grit sandpaper to sand down the pointed edges of the square dowel. (The sanding will add a more worn look to the dowels).
Then, four holes were drilled in the corners of my slaw cutter, and a starter hole in each of my dowel legs.
The legs were attached with wood screws.
This is NOT a craftsman or artisan project! It's a vintage wooden kitchen tool re-purposed as a rustic farmhouse style kitchen shelf. It's lacking perfection, but heavy on charm!
At this point you may stain the shelf, or oil the shelf with coconut oil or hemp oil to darken the wood. (If I ever get around to painting this wall white again instead of chalkboard black, I may darken the wood. And I may sand the edges more or use a rasp to further age the legs)
It's pretty cool as is for now!
Let's make a slaw cutter shelf vignette.
First, I tucked a wooden masher under the shelf, along with a vintage Folger's coffee can.
On top of the shelf, I placed a wire basket with potted faux basil and sage.
I also added a vintage grater with a vintage photo held with round magnet.
Then on the right, cutting boards, a jar of lids, and a bowl of faux greenery.
I like my farmhouse kitchen decorated with vintage kitchen items, once actually used for cooking.
*This shelf has a blade in the center (although not very sharp), and should not be used in a child's room or in the reach of small children.
The shelf helps with layering the vignette. Getting some of the items up off the counter. This adds interest.
The jar with packing tape label instructions are HERE.
