Junk Garden Fun with Sempervivums (Hen and Chicks)
March 08, 2018
Sempervivum or hen and chicks are an integral part of my junk gardens! They literally grow in anything with very little soil, and THRIVE!
I used part of a Round Coco Fiber Liner stuffed into the toaster slots to hold my dirt.
Many more ideas for Sempervivums in the garden follow:
Here hen and chicks are growing in a ricer/food mill and to the far right in a potato planter.
I like mixing sedums, hen and chicks and sweet alyssum in a low growing flower bed.
Here is a roaster cover with sedum and hen and chicks in a fairy garden variation.
Lots of chicks coming on these hens!
My gazing ball is a marble on a golf tee!
The bench was a thrift shop find that I painted to match my terracotta pots.
A terracotta pot anchored on a rustic picture frame with a nail through the bottom hole is a great planter for hen and chicks and trailing sedums.
Believe it or not, this is a photo of sempervivums growing in barnacles.
Very little soil!
Yes, they grew and filled in planted in barnacles.
They grow in muffin tins!
Another very shallow container is a vintage ice cube tray. I put holes through the bottom and added soil, stones and hen and chicks.
Hen and chicks planted in vintage measuring cups.
Hen and chicks and herbs in a kitchen fairy garden!
Sempervivums planted in between the spokes of an iron wheel.
Sempervivums in a metal rusty toy sports car.
Hen and chicks planted around a horse shoe game.
Hen and chicks planted in a bird's nest!
Hen and chicks planted in a funnel, and tucked into another pot.
This is a hen blooming.
I found the top to a milk can at an estate sale years ago.
It's perfect for hen and chicks.
Hen and chicks in old pulley parts.
Not much soil here!
But enough for hen and chicks!
Sedums and Sempervivums in a succulent garden that is "under road construction"!
An old grader and Dollar Tree pylons and stones add to the fun!
Galvanized farm piece added to a stake.
The chick starter image is from the Graphics Fairy. I used the Mod Podge image transfer method to add the label. Sealed many times with a Krylon clear spray sealer.
It's a groaner pun for sure!
Another chick starter idea with a small metal pail, image transfer and a banana stand.
My sister in law Kris displayed hen and chicks in terracotta pots in a frame.
She also displayed Sempervivum pots in a heavy industrial chain.
And how cool is her gnome pulling a wagon of sempervivum?
