Vintage Table Goes Plaid with the Plaid Shirt Stencil
March 25, 2018
I purchased this table last summer at a garage sale for $5.
It's an antique for sure.
Besides having a scratched and gouged finish, it needed some structural repairs as well.
It's not perfect, but it will have some charm.
If I were going to paint this old table with white chalk paint, I would have brushed on a couple coats of shellac first. These older finishes and stains tend to bleed through on light colored paint.
I decided to go with a new color, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Honfleur. (it's a medium brown hue.)
After painting the table with two coats of Honfleur, I centered the *Old Sign Stencils Plaid Shirt stencil with wider lines on my table top.
Plaid Shirt is a two piece stencil that I think is actually easier to use than the my beloved "Buffalo Check" stencil. It's quicker for sure.
Be sure to follow the instructions above.
The wider lines are stenciled with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Buttercream, and the thinner lines with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Buttercream.
I used one of my Dreamweaver stencil brushes.

I lightly distressed the table with 220 grit sandpaper.
I sealed the stencils and chalk paint with two coats of Varathane Matte Finish Soft Touch Polyurethane.
The table is definitely a statement piece now.
I think it has a lodge vibe, so I staged it with lodge accessories.
Have you tried stenciling yet? If not, Donna from Funky Junk Interiors/Old Sign Stencils has a great tutorial HERE..
Have you stenciled any furniture?
Stenciling is addictive, just so you know!
