You know what I hate? I hate it when I discover that I didn't take a before photo of my project.
I purchased this vintage soup ladle at the thrift shop. The handle showed some age but dipper part was still very shiny metal.
I painted the metal with two coats of Decoart Chalky Finish Paint in Artifact. Artifact is a gray chalk type paint.
I then painted the wooden handle with watered down DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge. By watering down the paint, it went on more transparent.
To give the ladle an aged look, I took out my Rust-Oleum Chalked Glaze in Semi-Transparent Smoked Gray.
I like this glaze a lot. You can brush it on or rub it on with a rag.
This is the dipper after the glaze.
I drilled a drainage hole in the bottom of the ladle.
I then sprayed on three coats of Minwax Water Based Helmsman Indoor/Outdoor Spar Urethane Aerosol in Satin.
I ripped a thin strip of course muslin fabric, and threaded it through the hole in the handle for hanging on my barn door pull.
I added a scoop of soil and Sempervivum, or hen and chicks. Hen and chicks are a succulent that require very little soil to thrive, or water.
An easy and inexpensive project!
If your old ladle is nice and worn, you wouldn't need to paint it to get this look!
This and that in the junk garden:
It was my birthday last week and I received an iron bird nest garden stake from my youngest daughter. My Elegant Garden Design stake is available here.
It's quite tall next to my front border stepladder.
I purchased the metal arrow sign at a rummage sale yesterday and nailed it to my potting sink.
I purchased these two border lilies at the Littlefork Citywide Rummage Sales a few weeks ago.
I am happy to report that they have started blooming in my front flower bed in a lovely reddish orange color.
None of the rest of my Asiatic lilies are in bloom yet. It will be in July.
These little blossoms belong to perennial creeping baby's breath (in white), and maiden pinks.
These sweet perennials bloom reliably in June in northern Minnesota.
Do you remember this junk garden vignette at planting time with wax and dragon wing begonias?
I am happy to report that the begonias are filling in nicely!
That's all for today!

The garden stake is so cute, what a unique gift! Happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteOh my stars, Carlene, the ladle is adorable! :) Such a great idea. Love the lilies. :) I think the lilies in my garden don't get enough sun to bloom. It may be too late (and traumatic) to move them. I adore how all your flowers are loving the summer there!
ReplyDeleteHere's to an awesome week!
