Garage Sale Primitive Salt Box House Gets a Farmhouse Makeover
August 16, 2018
This salt box prim house was one of my August garage sale finds!
I used to be big primitive country fan, but I have went farmhouse. It's so much lighter and brighter.
First, I pulled off the metal star, and painted the sides with Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Chiffon Cream mixed with Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White. About a 5:1 ratio. I wanted the Chiffon Cream to be more like Annie Sloan in Old White.
I painted the roof and chimney with Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Country Gray. I then distressed the edges with 100 grit sandpaper and the middle areas with 220 grit sandpaper.
The $2.99 "Farmhouse" stencil is from Hobby Lobby. I stenciled the lettering with off white paint.
I then sealed the paint and stencil with Varathane Interior Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish

I wanted a fall taper candle ring, but wasn't able to find one. So I improvised with a white pip berry taper candle ring.
I used Deco Art Americana Chalky Finish Paint in Heritage (orange) to dab paint on the pip berries.
I sprayed my new "fall wreath" with Krylon Clear Coatings Aerosol in Satin Finish. This sealed the paint and darkened it a bit.
I pounded a very small nail in the middle window ledge and hung the wreath on the nail. I also tied a few strings of raffia on my wreath.

Look inside. That's not a harvest moon, but it's an orange Christmas light bulb.
It doesn't show up in the daytime, but it will shine orange through the windows and door in the evening this fall.
I like it so much better!
What do you think?
A couple photos outside at dusk.

ReplyDeleteOh Carlene, this looks like a European villa farmhouse! Love it! Great job!!
ReplyDeleteSo adorable! I love those little houses, but they are always so primitive - I do like prims but my house is light too
