I am falling behind here with Christmas decorating! My kitchen table is a MESS.
I remembered at the very last minute that I had not taken a before photo of this $4 vintage, garage sale cabinet door. (The previous owner had hand written a Bible verse on the door. It's a great verse to be sure, but not done well.)
Anyway the door turned out to be too large for my stencil, so it had to be sawed in half.

First I painted the door with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in CAVIAR. It's a fabulous black, and I LOVE how it's a very flat matte finish, and I now use Zibra paint brushes for an almost brush free finish.

I am going to use my *Old Sign Stencils buffalo check stencil on the cabinet door inset. This will be a bit tricky. I am going to center it on the inset, on the diagonal, and tape it on with blue painter's tape.

I will be stenciling the red checks with DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge.
As I try to flatten the stencil along the inset edges (with my fingers), I get some paint on the cabinet frame. This can be touched up after stenciling.

Now the cabinet door is all buffalo checked!
This will be the background for a new Christmas stencil.
This is what my fingers look like when I stencil a non-flat object with the buffalo check stencil! I do a lot of holding the stencil down tight with my fingers.
Today I am introducing a *brand new JOY stencil from Old Sign Stencils. I chose the smaller size, vertical stencil.
This stencil fits so well in the cabinet door inset. The margins, around the stencils, are almost perfect.
I taped the JOY stencil on and pounced it on using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.
Except, I didn't use the letter "O"! This is the exciting part.
I used both the Christmas ball and smaller snowflake stencil as my "O".
I used the Caviar paint for the snowflake.
When the stenciling was complete, I wiped on Dixie Belle Best Dang Furniture Wax in Clear with a clean rag! I love this water based wax! So easy!

I left the old hardware on the cabinet door, but painted them the same color as the door.
Here is my finished door sign!
I love using a black base coat, and stenciling on the red checks for the most part. It is a more subtle background, and my piece doesn't get too busy. It's also very rich!
I'm going to hang this great new sign in my kitchen!
I will share my Christmas decor a little closer to Christmas.

My goodness... Carlene, I'm over the moon esctatic to see Joy in action! This is gorgeous! A cab door... I think it's time I start collecting a few!
ReplyDeleteI'm having fun sharing this one... count on that!
Love it! Especially the O. Love it love it!
ReplyDeleteCarlene, you did a super neat perfect job of stenciling those checks! The "Joy" is also PERFECT! You must have a ton of patience and knowledge. I haven't done much stenciling - I must be most impatient and do not hold the stencil down tight enough. Anyway, your "door" looks wonderful.
