DIY Neutral Christmas Pillow Covers and Signs with Old Sign Stencils
December 16, 2018
If you like stenciling, you should look into purchasing some of these natural canvas pillow covers from Hobby Lobby. The covers are available in 16" x 16", 12" x 20" and 18" x 18". I really like the 18" x 18" size. That's the standard sofa pillow size. I just change up the covers seasonally on my everyday pillows. Less to store!
Hobby Lobby has these pillow covers on sale frequently!
You can also cut applique shapes out of fabric and attach with HeatnBond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive. Like a moose or deer out of buffalo check flannel.

Even though the *Old Sign Stencils Christmas Trees' stencil was not designed to be used as a square pillow stencil, I was able to make it work for my pillow cover.
I had to center the word Christmas on my pillow cover. I always tape the stencil in place with blue painter's tape.
I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black to stencil "Christmas".
Next, I centered the row of trees above "Christmas", and stenciled them using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Amsterdam Green.
I then centered the word "Trees" under "Christmas", and stenciled "Trees" using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Honfleur.
I like the pillow on my neutral herringbone, Flexsteel Westside sofa.
The knitted throw is from Target, a few years ago.
I used the new Merry Christmas pillow stencil from Old Sign Stencils for my other sofa pillow.
I didn't pre-wash the pillow covers, but I did press them a bit with the iron.
I placed the "Merry Christmas" stencil in the center of the pillow cover, and taped it in place.
I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black to stencil the words, and Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint in Moss for the trees. After the trees were dry, I pounced the string of lights on the center tree using Fusion Mineral Paint in Cranberry.
I do not iron directly on the stenciling. I iron from the wrong side, or use parchment paper or a pressing cloth to iron the right side.

Here is Christmas sofa pillow number two.
This is the old green chippy crate I stenciled with the Christmas trees stencil HERE.
It has "Trees" on the back, and "Pine-Spruce-Fir" on the ends.

Inside the crate is a Hobby Lobby deer from several years ago, a potted faux evergreen, and a stoneware jug sporting a felted wool, bead garland created by Susan of the Homeroad blog.
I purchased it through her Homeroad Etsy Shop.
The crate is situated on my coffee table.
I also used the Christmas trees sign to stencil two Christmas signs on garage sale used art canvases HERE.
I will be wrapping up my Christmas posts this week!
