DIY One Piece Valentine's Day Decor From Thrifted Finds

January 06, 2019

Dated wooden pieces with heart cut-outs are always easy to find at my local thrift shops.

They are PERFECT for up-cycled Valentine's Day home decor.

I had a lot of these pieces myself 20+ years ago.  I never thought I would be re-buying them again!

(When you click on the bold Amazon, Old Sign Stencils or Dixie Belle Paint Company affiliate links you will be taken to the products I use for this project.  Since these pieces tend to be dark stained pine with no sealer or poly, I decided to brush on Dixie Belle Paint Company Boss in Clear.

"Boss" is a low or no VOC product that blocks stains and odors, and prevents stain bleed through with lighter chalk or mineral paints.

I decided to paint the piece with Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Country Gray.  It's a neutral that will blend in well with farmhouse style decor.

I have started using Zibra brushes with great results.  Zibra brushes leave hardly any brush marks.

I added a 25 cent brass thrifted hook to one side of the piece.

I purchased two of these wooden box things at a garage sale.  They were marked as "shop pencil holders".

After removing the back and cutting down the pencil box to two rows, it was attached to the other side of my heart project.

I didn't like it in a different color, than the heart piece, so it too was painted Country Gray.

I painted the brass hook on the other side gray as well.

I really didn't have a Valentine's Day stencil that would fit the front panel, so I added just a few red buffalo checks (on the diagonal) with my *Old Sign Stencils Buffalo Check stencil and DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I then stenciled a heart on the panel with a simple heart stencil and Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Light Ivory.  I sealed the paint and stencils with Rust-Oleum Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish.

Here is my finished project!

It's my ONE PIECE Valentine's Day decor!  Which is perfect because I rarely decorate for Valentine's Day anymore!

On the right I can hang a container, like this little pail, and fill it with candy.

I filled the little pail with Valentine's Day red, pink and white packages of Sixlets.

Sixlets are available at the Dollar Tree.

On the left side, I have a Valentine's Day card holder.

These are Baby Boomer era Valentines that I received from my classmates and relatives.

I have many more vintage Valentines that were mine, my dad's and my grandma's too.

The center area of my heart piece is for a flowers.  Here I have faux tulips in a galvanized vase.

This spot would also work for a real bouquet of flowers, or even a potted plant.  A heart shaped red plant pick could be added to a houseplant.

If you don't have the buffalo check stencil, (or are sick of it, LOL), you can add just the heart or the word "Love".

My one piece Valentine's Day decor piece will work perfectly as a table centerpiece.

  1. I love that you embraced the old style wood cutout hearts and added even more hearts to make it come together and you made something quite unique and just so cute! Using it as a centerpiece you could also fill the center up with candy, put another little box instead of the hook, and fill that one with sealed current day Valentines for your hunny...lol. I think the guys would even love the buffalo check!
