Route 66/Stop Sign Upcycled Bookends
March 24, 2019
I found a set of homemade wooden bookends at a garage sale a few years ago.
They were stained a dark brown.
At this time, my first thought was to paint them with my new found love, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.
I distressed the paint with sandpaper.
I then stenciled them with a number, and waxed them with Annie Sloan Clear Wax.
Unfortunately, I used too much wax back then and many of my pieces had stain bleed through. I sanded the bookends down with 100 grit sandpaper that removed most of the wax, and a lot of the paint.

I then re-painted the bookends with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray.
I distressed the edges and center areas a bit with sandpaper, that revealed both the brown stain and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.
Now to decorate my gray bookends.
I recently purchased Route 66 magnets, (very inexpensive)
The magnet fronts are metal and the backs are a sticky rubber magnet.
I stuck my fingernail under the magnets and removed them.
Then the metal fronts of the magnets were nailed onto my bookends. Use a drill to make nail holes in the magnet signs.
I then waxed my bookends with Dixie Belle Best Dang Furniture Wax in Clear. Dixie Belle Wax is a water based wax and much easier to apply than Annie Sloan Wax.
I use the wax very sparingly, applying with a INTEX SUPPLY Fiber Rag, and rubbing it down with another fiber rag.
Now my bookends are rustic and fun.
Route 66 is such an iconic sign.
I stenciled/upcycled a Kmart seasonal sign last summer using a stencil from Old Sign Stencils.
