Shoe Shine Caddy/Kit Repurposed As Spring Caddy
March 04, 2019
New flooring is still in progress here in half of my house!
And the very cold, and very snowy winter continues as well. Last week, I picked up this vintage, wooden shoe shine caddy at a local antiques shop for $4. Thrifting is always slower in the winter, and especially during an extreme winter. It's been slim pickens'.
When I purchased the caddy, I was thinking Easter basket/Easter decor, but I just didn't like the big shoe shaped handle.
I asked my husband, pretty please, to take the shoe shaped handle out to the garage and slim it down, and to even the sides out, using the chop saw.
It was too long for the chop saw, but he managed to cut the sides down and sand them pretty smooth too.

My next step was to paint the caddy with two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray.
I then distressed the caddy with 220 grit sandpaper, mostly on the edges.
This Simply Spring stencil was one of a three pack that I recently purchased from Joann Fabrics. It's currently priced at $4.99.
I used the "plant" and "bird on a watering can" portions of the stencil on my spring caddy.
I chose Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Light Ivory for the stenciling.
I wiped Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear on my project using an Intex Pfc Precision-fiber Paint & Cleaning Rag.
This is the shoe form handle that my husband sawed and sanded down for me.
I decided to wrap the handle in the center with jute.
I knotted it on the bottom of the handle, worked the tail of the string under the rows of jute, and tied it off underneath at the end. I then cut the string end and glued the tail down along the jute rows to blend in.
So here is my finished spring plant caddy!
Both ends of the caddy are stenciled with the watering can/bird stencil.
The antique shoe caddy becomes spring decor with a little paint and stenciling!
