I found this natural wood bunk bed ladder at the thrift shop for $8.
I gave it a new purpose and a makeover!

It was in very good condition, except for some mildew on one side. To make sure there was no bleed through of the stain or any odor, I brushed two coats of Dixie Belle Boss in Clear.
This product has worked for me many times to prevent stain or knots bleeding through light colored paints. It is water based and very low VOC as well.

Next I brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray.
Hurricane Gray, is a darker chalk finish mineral paint from Dixie Belle, that needs no topcoat. However, I like to finish my pieces with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear or Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax , when durability is not an issue.

Then, I brushed two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in CAVIAR onto two 9" x 10" x 1/2" birch, craft plywood.
The birch plywood is available in a 20" x 23" x 1/2" size at our local Menard's for $2.99.
And the other with Wild Flower Seeds. Old Sign Stencils has four new summer garden stencils, and I love them all.
I used three Dixie Belle Paints for the stenciling:
1. Dixie Belle Soft Pink
2. Dixie Belle Farmhouse Green
3. Dixie Belle Drop Cloth
I distressed the signs lightly, and applied Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax.

One of my 9" x 10" boards was stenciled with *Old Sign Stencils Fresh Cut Flowers,

I hung my ladder horizontally, and added the signs and other flower garden decor.
The narrow rustic metal vase/planter is from Hobby Lobby.
This is the right side of the ladder,
AND, this is the left!
When I woke up May 6th to snow, I knew I wouldn't be working in the garden or going to the garden shops, so instead, I STENCILED my flowers!
My daughter wanted a ladder shelf for her bedroom so I think this is it!
Just think how easy it would be to change the signs, and the decor seasonally!
If you want to start building your stencil inventory, these garden stencils are a great place to start!

Carlene, you certainly have vision! I love the old bunk bed ladder repurposed like this - and to hang it horizontally. I was expecting it to be vertical and leaning, and covered in quilts or blankets! Love the idea of these little nooks lined up with signs and flowers for spring. Just divine.
ReplyDeleteI so envy you people that live in weather that is cold so long. I am in Alabama USA and today it was 82 degrees F, Flowers are blooming, gardens are planted, strawberries are ready to pick. Of course by July it will be 100 degrees, everything will be wilted, we will be sweating (not gently perspiring but SWEATING) and dreading August. But I really would not enjoy more than a week of snow and cold.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, the whole thing looks fabulous and handy too!
ReplyDeleteThis project is absolutely stunning, Carlene! I love how the ladder frames the art, and with an added shelf, adds a wonderful 3D effect! Such gorgeous signs!
