I found this pallet sign at the thrift shop in March of 2018.
I purchased it with the intention of giving it a makeover.

I painted the pallet sign a lighter gray and stenciled a mandala on the center. I also added two handles to repurpose it as a tray.
Last summer, I displayed a small birdcage with a small bucket of annual baby's breath inside, on top of the tray.
Fast forward to this summer, I removed the handles, and sanded the tray with a power sander.
I removed almost half of the paint with the sander and brushed on a "homemade wood aging mix" of white vinegar and steel wool. (This mixture is all over pinterest and google with better instructions and also videos.)
Next, I pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils Apple Farm stencil and pounced and swirled the lettering using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.
I also painted the handles with Ash, and sealed my project with two coats of water based Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in Matte.
Here is my finished "rustic" tray.
I love this makeover!

Do you remember this $1 enamelware coffeepot purchased last month at a garage sale?
I cleaned it up with hot soapy Dawn dish soap water, AND
Stenciled just the word CIDER on the side of the coffeepot, also using Ash paint.
The "Apple Cider" stencil is also available through *Old Sign Stencils. Click on the link to check out the whole stencil catalog.
All prices on the Old Sign Stencils are in Canadian currency, but there is a handy conversion link for your convenience.
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I protected the stencil with a couple of coats of Krylon Gallery Series Artist and Clear Coatings in Satin Finish.
The two newly stenciled pieces anchor an early fall rustic vignette, along with an old scale, enamelware cups, faux apples, twine and a pulley.
Before you sell or get rid of your old decor, consider giving it a makeover first.
Thanks for visiting!

Carlene, I love enamelware and the coffeepot is the berries! So cool. I have a piece of tan enamelware with green trim--that medium shade that was used in the forties--and it is about the size of your coffee pot, has a lid and a bail handle. Don't know what its purpose was but it would have been a sort of canister or something I guess. Or even a cookie or cracker jar. I used it for a time to hold my vegetable parings for compost. I haven't come up with any other way to use it but maybe I should stencil the work "COOKIES" on it and get to baking! I"m sure my grandsons would approve!
ReplyDeleteLove both projects, but my fav is the coffepot! Gives a nostalgic feeling and reminds me that fall is just around the corner:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute vignette! Love those faux apples in the cups. I need to add some of those to my "back to school" vignette! You are so clever! The old coffee pot looks great. Love the re-make on your tray, too.
