Garage Sale Cabinet Door Gourmet Kitchen Sign/Wall Hooks

August 25, 2019

I purchased two of these antique cabinets doors at a garage sale this past summer.  I thought they were $1 each, but the tag said $1 for two.

One has already been up-cycled, now for door 2!

One of my blogging pet peeves is discovering that no "before" or  "during the project" photos where taken on a project.

Like this project.  I went from before to this.  I totally missed the primer step. This door is likely mahogany so I used Zinsser Odorless Primer and Stain Blocker in White (an oil based primer).  I chose Dixie Belle Boss in Clear for the first cabinet door project that had a gray base coat.  This project has been base coated with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.

I was thinking winter with the "Let It Snow" stencil, but eventually went another way.

I decided to add a red grain sack stripe to my cabinet door using my *Old Sign Stencils Thick Three Line Grain Sack Stripe stencil.

I pounced it on with DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge.  I lightly sanded the stenciling with 220 grit sandpaper.

Thank you to *Old Sign Stencils for providing me with complimentary grain sack stencils!  All opinions on these wonderful stencils are my own.

I then considered the three transfer sheets in my new Prima Re-Design Decor Transfer-Delicious Menu.

Lots of great kitchen/food words.

I picked the word "Gourmet", cut it out, and lined it up on the cabinet door inset.

I removed the paper backing.

I rubbed on the transfer on using the stick provided in the transfer packaging tube.  (read the directions)

Faux light distressing on the cabinet edges was added using my FolkArt Layering Block and Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Walnut Noyer.

I waxed over the door's stenciling, paint and transfer using Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.  Besides protecting the project, the wax makes the transfer "halos" around the transfer letters disappear.

Two Hobby Lobby Fleur d' lis hooks were attached with screws to each side of the door, and sawtooth hangers were added to the back.

Display your vintage or gourmet utensils on the hooks!

The Prima Marketing transfer packages are a little spendy, but just look how many more transfers I have left to add to other projects!

  1. Love it. New but Old-looking! You do such a good job on your upcycles, and your stenciling turns out great.
