This stool was one of my recent thrift shop finds. I paid $10. I shared it in a blog post HERE.
The tag underneath the seat identifies it as a Donie Chair Company product from 1992. Judging by the heart stencil, I think it's from that "cutesy country" time frame.

I took the stool apart cleaned it up with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag. Sanded it a bit with 220 grit sandpaper. (just to rough up the finish)
Next I painted the wood frame with two coats of Homestead House Milk Paint in Fort York Red. I distressed the milk paint with 220 grit sandpaper.
I then pulled out a Tim Holtz Mini Layered Stencil Three Pack, that I purchased about a month ago.
With the stencil, I created a Nordic style braid on the back slats of the stool.
I stenciled part of the braid with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in White, and the black using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.
Now for the seat. I thought at first that it was a rush seat. I found a couple of different blog posts in which the authors stained the rush seat. I tried that first with gray stain, but unfortunately, the stain remained sticky. It just didn't soak in, even after overnight.
Plan B. I used mineral spirits on a rag to remove the stain.
I then brushed on a couple of coats of gray chalk paint that I had on hand, Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Country Gray.
I "wet distressed" the seat with a damp tee shirt rag to remove some of the paint.
The stool frame was sealed with Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil and the seat was sealed with Dixie Belle Big Mama's Butta.
After the hemp oil was dry, I also rubbed some Big Mama's Butta on the frame as well. I used an INTEX Fiber Rag to apply both.

The stool update is complete.
I have to admit that I have been slow to jump on the gnome band wagon. These are the first two that I have ever purchased, including garden gnomes.
Gnomes seemed to coordinate with my Nordic theme, and with good reason. Swedish gnomes are called Tomtes, and Norwegian gnomes are Nisses.
Remember my small Nordic chair post?
I added the chair to my vignette, along with a $3 consignment shop towel, a hanger with an Anneko Swedish Dishcloth ($5.95), an enamelware Dala horse plate marked Sweden (from a consignment shop for $3), and a MeraVic gnome sign (purchased at a local drug store $8.95.
Also two gnomes from the local drug store, the larger one was $31.95 and marked Dei Designs and the smaller Gerson gnome "Open House" priced at $2.99.
Going Nordic with red Christmas decor!
Pin for later!
