I paid $1 at a garage sale for this wooden recipe box.
It held a lot of recipe cards at one time.
Since I won't be using it for recipe cards, it's time for a Christmas makeover.

After cleaning the recipe box with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water, and scuffing up the finish a bit with 220 grit sandpaper, I brushed on two coats of my favorite black, Dixie Belle Paint in Caviar.
I then distressed the edges a bit with 220 grit sandpaper.
I recently ordered the Prima Marketing Gingham Red Image Transfer from a shop on Etsy.
I had recently seen the gingham transfers used on a sled and chairs at Q is for Quandie blog. The transfer comes in four sheets with two different plaid patterns.
I then pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils You Cut Tree Farm Stencil. I have used this stencil before as fabric template, why not on a patterned transfer?
Since the transfer has a protective clear plastic sheet on top, I used a Sharpie to trace the tree pattern onto my plaid transfer.
I then cut out the transfer, removed the paper backing, centered the tree on my box, and rubbed it on with the enclosed stick.
I then pulled off the clear plastic top sheet.
I stenciled the star from the "You Cut Tree Farm" stencil above the tree using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Fluff.
I then used one of my 2019 Christmas stencils, Christmas Crates.
This stencil has so many holiday decor possibilities!
All prices on the Old Sign Stencils's website are listed in Canadian currency. A handy currency conversion link is provided for your convenience.
*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.
I added two stars on the top.
Here is the front and one of the sides.
And here is the other side.
I sealed the box with Dixie Belle Big Mama's Butta. I love it this wax! It adds so much depth and richness to the paint color. Also does not get streaky like some waxes do.
Just rub it on with a wax brush or a rag, and then rub off any excess after it dries. I find that most of it soaks in, however, the transfer top stayed a little greasy until I wiped it down good.
Next I painted this little $5 divided drawer with my Dixie Belle Paint in Caviar. (after giving it a good cleaning). I used hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and also a little Krud Kutter.
The divided drawer is great for display.
Here is one stenciled side.
Here is another.
Here is the back.
And here are both of my black Christmas project pieces!
I'm really liking black Christmas decor this year.
