This tray was part of my November Junk Finds post.
I purchased it on Black Friday at a Twin Cities Goodwill.

The inspiration for my serving tray project, came from this tray, upcycled by Christina Fay Repurposed.
Christina's tray "before" photo.
Christina's tray was 10″ x 10″ square, so the Hubs (as she calls him) cut the 1/4" x 2 1/2" board into four 10" x 2 1/2" slats. Christina stained them and hot glued them into her tray.
Now back to my tray.
I roughed up the finish (as the tray's finish was very shiny) with sandpaper.
My tray was most likely homemade, rectangular instead of square, and wasn't a perfect 4 boards.
I picked up two Mastercraft boards at our local Menard's. One was 1/4" x 2 1/2" x 4' and the other 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 4'. I think they were Poplar or Aspen.
I stained them with Rust-Oleum Dark Walnut Stain, and my HUBS cut the boards for me on the chop saw.

I painted the sides of the tray with a couple of coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.
However, this is where things didn't go so well. Trying to place the boards back into the tray was awful. Maybe if I had numbered their placement, it may have been better.
Some boards were a little too tight and some too loose, and I really scraped the fresh paint on the sides of the tray. The sides on this tray were a little to tall to work out as easily as Christina's.
After buying another board at Menards, staining and re-cutting three slats, AND touching up the paint, the boards finally all fit snug in the tray. I glued the last two strips with wood glue. The other slats fit very tightly and won't move.
I definitely will try this again with a square tray with lower sides, because I love the look.
I pulled out my Prima Redesign Transfer EVERYDAY FARMHOUSE. The transfer sheets are a little spendy, but they can be used on many projects.
I picked four different transfers from the sheets, and started rubbing them on.
It's really pretty easy, especially on painted wood.
After I added my image transfers, I waxed the whole tray with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear and a wax brush.
The other three sides of the tray.
The first item I added to my serving tray, Valentine's Day, container vignette is my jar of buffalo check hearts from a recent blog post HERE.
Next I added a Bromwell's flour sifter that I had primed with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Primer Spray and brush painted with Dixie Belle Paint in Drop Cloth.
I then waxed the sifter and added a few faux red tulips.

Other items added to the container vignette, include a small sifter with a faux herb plant, a grater with a vintage Valentine (from my personal collection), a heart shaped cookie cutter, and a wooden masher with a red handle.

Love your tray and the cute little vignette you have created for Valentine's Day. I would like to create one very much like yours, and I can see changing out the contents of the jar and or sifter with St. Patrick's Day greens and later Easter eggs. You are such an inspiration, Carleen. Love your posts.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Barb! I like the tray a lot and I will be using it for more vignettes! Maybe not St Patrick's Day, as I am not Irish.
