This vintage chair was part of my November finds post.
I liked the lines on the chair, even though spindles are a pain in the butt to paint!

I cleaned the chair with hot soapy water with Dawn Dish Soap.
I then roughed up the finish a bit using 220 grit sandpaper. It took me about 5 minutes to rough up the old finish.
I tried a brand new paint color on this chair. It's Homestead House Milk Paint in Quaker Blue.
On the Homestead House website, Quaker Blue is described as a muted slate blue with a hint of greenish-grey.
I mix milk paint in a canning jar in a one to one ratio with water and stir it with a plastic spoon.
Milk paint is somewhat unpredictable as to how much it will chip. Sometimes not at all. The milk paint on the chair chipped mostly on the seat. I sanded and distressed the paint with 220 grit sandpaper. Milk paint has a very smooth finish.
I found this Artminds French stencil package at Michael's on Black Friday in the Twin Cities. It is also available on line.

The square stencil in the package fit the chair seat perfectly.
I then taped the stencil onto the chair seat with blue painter's tape and stenciled the pattern using Fusion Mineral Paint in Champlain.
I also stenciled just the small crown on the top back slat of the chair.

I chose Dixie Belle Big Mama's Butta to wax the paint and stencils.
I applied it with a wax brush and then wiped it down with a fiber rag.

The chair would work well as a desk chair, foyer chair or bedroom chair.
I think I will be trying new paints, new colors and new techniques in 2020!
