Round Vintage Frame Upcycled As Mandala Wall Decor
February 12, 2020
I got this old round frame from my mom. It's a vintage frame with fine nails holding in the glass.
Does the horseback rider look familiar? It's me.

This project had a few Plan B's before I was happy with it. In the first take, I base coated the glass with Dixie Belle Slick Stick to better adhere my chalk paint to the glass. Unfortunately the glass was very thin and cracked down the middle in the process.
So on to the next plan. I sent my husband out to our garage to cut a round piece of bead board paneling to fit the frame. (Don't feel too sorry for him, he is the one that broke the glass!)

I will be using the smooth side of the bead board paneling circle for my project.
I purchased the "unfinished" bead board wainscot at our local Menards. I had lots more left over for more frames.
I painted the bead board circle with Dixie Belle Paint in Driftwood.
My plan was to stencil the circle with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in The Gulf and the above stencil, but I found the aqua color didn't show up all that well on the Driftwood gray paint.
So on the final try, I brushed two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in The Gulf onto the paneling circle.
The stencil I chose is FolkArt Mandala Burst.
It's a 12" x 12" stencil, and is available at Amazon and also at Michael's.
I pounced on the stencil using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Fluff. The frame was painted with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.
The bead board was held in the frame with Red Devil Glazing Push Points.

Here is my finished framed wall art piece, sealed with Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
My jewelry armoire upcycle project matches my framed mandala wall art pretty well!

Carlene, Love it, and it's just my color. If I could move, I would be your next door neighbor. You always have great ideas that are clever and who knew just what I needed or maybe wanted ;) Have fun, Cheryl
ReplyDeleteThanks Cheryl! I might end up selling it on FB. Was going to use it for more photos first.
