Upcycling Fun With A Thrift Shop Recipe Box And Stripes
February 27, 2020
I found this double wide, oak recipe box at a Goodwill shop in the Twin Cities.
How about the large "rainbow trout" knob on top?

I wanted to give it both a new look AND a new purpose.
After washing the recipe box with hot, soapy Dawn Dish Soap and a rag, I brushed on a couple of coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.
I used a cheap sponge brush to apply the paint.
For this project, I chose both the skinny FROGTAPE Multi-Surface Painter's Tape for the sides of the box, and the wider 1.88" FROG TAPE for the lid. I have tried stripes before using blue painter's tape with mixed results. (but mostly always some bleed under)
I put the first piece of tape in the center of the area, and work my way each way using a ruler.
I used a sponge brush to apply Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Fluff on the stripes.
I also painted the bottom of the box.
This is the box lid with stripes, and a new plain knob.
I waxed the box with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.
The lid actually stays open and erect, so I striped the inside lid too. The box worked well for display.
The front view is nice,
BUT, the profile is awesome!
Have you tried paint stripes with tape?
