Garage Sale Sconces Repurposed As Finials
April 15, 2020
Sometimes it takes a while for me to come up with an idea for my purchases.
These two metal sconces were shared in a thrifting and garage sale-ing post from 8/2017.

Instead of just painting them, I unscrewed the sconces trying to come up with an idea. My idea worked. I found a way to make them into finials.

The candle cup and drip pan parts of the sconces were set off to the side.
The short hortizontal pieces were both removed and one was set aside. The other short horizontal piece was screwed into the round base with the long stem piece. Both sides of the short piece were threaded.
For the other sconce (that I wanted shorter), I just attached the long stem to the round base with a screw. The long stem was threaded so it was pretty easy to turn the screw up into the stem piece.

I then brushed one coat of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray onto the finials.
I thought the finials were too dark so I then painted them with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.
I used a damp tee shirt rag to lightly wet distress the finials.
Both of the finials have a hole in one side that I could fill and paint over but I just turned them to the back of my display.
I waxed the finials with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.
The finials can be used in many different vignettes. Here they are in a spring vignette with my recent spring painted pots HERE, the green flower holder HERE, and an older upcycled white tray project HERE.

Your finished project looks nice but they looked to be copper. I love the green as copper ages.
ReplyDeleteThey were not copper. Just a pot metal. The paint scratches off. Thanks!
