Dollar Tree DIY Christmas Stenciled Art Canvases
December 10, 2020
Last time I was in Dollar Tree, I discovered that they now sell art canvases.
I purchased three 8" x 10" canvases at $1 each,
And one three pack of 4" x 6" canvases for $1.
I would much rather paint and stencil on found thrifted items, but this year, it has unfortunately been really hit and miss on great finds.
(When you click on the bold Amazon, Old Sign Stencils or Dixie Belle Paint Company affiliate links you will be taken to the products I use for this project. First I brushed a couple of coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar on the three canvases.
And, since I haven't buffalo checked many projects this season, I pulled out my treasured Buffalo Check Stencil from Old Sign Stencils. I have used this stencil sooooo many times for seasonal and everyday use.
I pounced on the checks using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Barn Red. I like a more opaque look on the buffalo checks.
If you want to see the squares and lines fully filled in, you can apply a second paint coat rather than try to apply one heavy coat.
Next, I chose my Vertical JOY Stencil from Old Sign Stencils.
I then stenciled the "J" on one canvas and the "Y" on another with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.
I pounced AND swirled the stencil brush for a more solid stencil on the letters.
I selected the ornament and snowflake from the Small Full Accessories Stencil in place of the letter "O".
I continued with Drop Cloth for the ornament, and selected Caviar for the snowflake.
I lightly distressed the canvases with 220 grit sandpaper,
And then waxed them for indoor use with Dixie Belle's Big Mama's Butta.
The Big Mama's Butta darkened the paint colors nicely and gave them a slight sheen.
Sawtooth hangers were added to the back top of the canvases for hanging.
Moving on to the small canvases, I painted one with Drop Cloth, one with Caviar, and one with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Putty.
For the small canvases, I grabbed my Mini Christmas Tree Signs Stencil from Old Sign Stencils. I will be using the tree, star, round pot, ski, and PINE SPRUCE FIR part of the stencil.
All pricing and shipping amounts on the website are stated in Canadian funds, and will be converted to US funds.
*Old Sign Stencils has provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.
Other paint colors used in this project include, Dixie Belle in Caviar, Drop Cloth, Putty, and Manatee Gray, and also Fusion Mineral Paint in Bayberry.
I waxed the canvases with Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
I would love to say that the canvases fit perfectly in a 4" x 6" frame, but they didn't. They needed to be cut down a bit with an Exacto type knife.
Anyway, here is the PINE with the Caviar background.
Here is SPRUCE with the Putty background.
AND, FIR with the Drop Cloth background.
So which color background do you like best?
I will definitely be buying more canvases at Dollar Tree.
I think I chose the black background! It's so easy to coordinate your Christmas decor with Old Sign Stencils.
Thanks for visiting!
