A Dollar General Garden Flag Farmhouse Style Makeover
February 21, 2021
Garden decor is arriving at the dollar shops. This little flag was a $1 purchase at our local Dollar General.
I like the idea of garden flags, I just don't like the overly bright colors of this flag with my farmhouse/junk garden decor.

I've always heard that you can paint fabric with chalk paint, so I gave it a try.
If you read over the chalk painted furniture makeovers on the internet, they all say to mist your fabric with a spray bottle of water before painting.
I removed the flag from the metal hanger, and misted it with my spray bottle.
Then I brushed on one coat of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth. The paint pretty much disappeared, and I thought soaked into the fabric. But, it had really flowed through the fabric to the newspaper underneath. When I moved the flag up on the newspaper, this wet paint spot remained.
I placed the flag on a plastic wrapper, and painted again without any water spray. This worked much better.
I brushed paint on the back of the flag too to give the thin fabric more body.
I pulled out an inexpensive feed stencil from Hobby Lobby.
I then taped it on my painted flag and pounced on the stencil using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.
Here is the stenciled flag.
I will likely spray a sealer on the flag before I use it outside on my covered patio. The sealer will protect it from moisture and dirt. I have Rust-Oleum Spray Paint Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover in Matte Clear on hand.
This was a super easy garden flag makeover.
I want to use this flag in a container plant on my covered patio this summer, but for now, it's going to have to be a houseplant flag.
In my previous garden flag projects, I replaced the flags with a stenciled canvas flag HERE.
I also have a winter/Christmas houseplant flag HERE.
Thanks for visiting.
