Dollar General Farmhouse Jar Sign Makeovers
February 12, 2021
You may remember that I like to upcycle Dollar General jar signs.
I just purchased two more. These jar signs were in the Valentine's Day decor section, and they were bigger than the last two I upcycled.
The jar signs aren't too bad "as is" but I don't even decorate for Valentine's Day much anymore, and the signs have a "mass produced" look versus a homemade look. I will make give them a farmhouse style makeover.
(When you click on the bold Amazon, Old Sign Stencils or Dixie Belle Paint Company affiliate links you will be taken to the products I use for this project. First off, I removed the heart and lettering on top of the signs, and also the jute. The decorations were attached with small staples that needed to be pulled out and/or snipped off.
I then sanded smooth the stapled areas.
On the previous two jar signs, I was able to unscrew the lids, but these were stapled on, so I taped the metal before painting.
I brushed two coats of paint on each jar, using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Vintage Duck Egg and Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray.
I purchased a new decor transfer from Redesign with Prima on Etsy, VINTAGE Seeds for $27.99.
These design transfers are pricey, but I will be able to use this transfer purchase on 19 different projects!
Design transfers are fairly easy to apply. The jars had grooves that made it a bit more tricky.
I cut out two transfers that fit on my jar signs, removed the paper backing, and carefully centered them on the jars. I used the stick to rub the transfers down. I always pull the plastic top layer up and off carefully. If the transfer is not properly stuck down, I can stick it back down and rub some more before pulling up the plastic.
I then distressed the edges with 220 grit sandpaper.
I folded a small bit of sandpaper over twice and ran the point down the grooves under my transfer.
I then waxed the jars with Dixie Belle Best Dang Furniture Wax in Clear.
I wrapped jute twine around the neck of the jar and hung a round number tag on the string before tying.
The number tags are Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Foundry Metal Adornments.
Here is the Hurricane Gray jar.
And this is the Vintage Duck Egg jar.
The upcycled jars fit much better with my colors and style of farmhouse decor!
Here are my previous jar signs.
