My daughters picked up this unfinished, hinged, treasure chest shaped box at Goodwill in the Twin Cities.
It needs some paint, and probably stencils or decor transfers!

This is the side view of the box.
My first step was to stain the box, inside and out, with Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain in Briarsmoke.
This was also my first mistake. The stain did not look anything like the sample or the picture on the can.
In the above photo, some of the stain had been wiped off with mineral spirits. The stain covered like paint with no wood grain showing through.
I left the inside with gray stain, and painted the exterior of the box with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth. It took three coats to cover the dark stain completely.
I then pulled out a new tube of decor transfers from Redesign with Prima, Spring Flowers.
Spring Flowers is a four piece transfer. I cut out the area in the gray rectangle above to add to the front of my box.
I looked through my Hobby Lobby stencil folder to find a design to stencil on the sides of the box, and found this one.
I did a combination of swirling and pouncing to add the stencil with Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash. These cheaper stencils are fragile and I had some trouble with small parts moving while swirling.
This is the design added to each side. The box was sealed with Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
Other wooden box makeovers (all photos have a link below them to click for details):
A heart cutout box from Goodwill upcycled around Valentine's Day.
A primitive wooden box was painted and stenciled as a planter box.
These two Christmas boxes received their makeover in 2020 with stencils from Old Sign Stencils.
This recipe box got a stripe decor makeover for display.
This organizer box had such neat brass corners and a fun tag, I painted it and gave it an all over floral monochromatic stencil.
This Christmas box was decorated with Christmas shipping stencils and a plaid decor transfer. More stencils from Old Sign Stencils.
These snowflake boxes were unfinished and free boxes from my aunt.
This Christmas box had both a Hobby Lobby stencil and Hobby Lobby drawer pulls.
This cheese box table was transformed into a side table with Hobby Lobby hairpin legs.
This cheese box also became a table with legs from Hobby Lobby. The buffalo check and coffee stencils are from Old Sign Stencils.
This was an unfinished, thrifted box that was decorated inside and out to become a display piece.
This box was a humidor. I still have some issues with mahogany bleed through on this one in a couple spots. I use it for storage on my desk.
This in box was a plain ugly desk tray until it received a fun makeover. I also use this on my desk.
