Thrifted Primitive Flower Box Receives A Makeover With Legs
May 04, 2021
I found this rustic, primitive country style flower box at our local thrift shop. It was made in China.
I gave it a sophisticated new look!

After washing down the box with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag, I brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.
I did not paint the inside of the box that had a wood stain finish.
I purchased this three piece FolkArt Dimensional Stencil Pack, Architectural at Michael's in the Twin Cities.
I did not find it on Michael's website, but it is available on Amazon.
I centered this piece of the stencil on the center of the front of the box and taped it on. I swirled Dixie Belle Paint in Drop Cloth onto the stencil.
My box was 18 1/2" wide, 5 7/8" deep, and 5 7/8" high.
Four 8" boards and two 5 3/4" boards were cut from a 1" x 2" x 4' furring strip. Two of the 8" boards were pre-drilled and attached with brass screws to the 5 3/4" board at the 2" point.
Then the 1" x 2" boards were stained with Aged Wood Accelerator.
The two sets of legs cradled the box.
Because the box had some movement within the legs, the box was screwed through the inside bottom to the cross braces.
The legs were attached 2" in from the ends of the box.
I then sealed the paint and stencils with Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
The wood on my box was pretty rough sawn and rustic, so I didn't mind the screws showing on the outside of the legs.
I added a couple of vintage gardening books and a faux plant to my planter box.
The project was very easy.
