Decorative Urns from Thrift Shop Finds

Back in 2017, I created two flower urns from thrift shop finds.  The first one started out with this metal flower pot.

This wooden candle holder had been in my parts stash for a while.  From a garage sale or thrift shop, no doubt.

I gave it a coat of latex black paint.

Then I painted both pieces with two coats Dutch Boy Chalky Finish Paint in Antiquated Lace. (I no longer use this paint. I would have chosen Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth now.

Since the candle holder had a dip in the center, a shim was added to even off the top of the candle holder and prevent the screw from bending out the flowerpot bottom.

Instead of distressing my DIY urn with sandpaper, I used the FolkArt Home Decor Layering Wood Block, 36046 and Walnut Noyer color craft paint.

I added a brown tag with "HERBS" for extra decoration, stamped with capital letter stamps.

The urn has been holding a houseplant (inside a plastic pot) since 2017.

The polyurethane sealer eventually caused something from the metal to bleed through the white paint.

I decided to repaint the urn with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.

It took two coats.

Next I cut out one of the gold decor transfers from the Redesign With Prima Gilded Home & Nature Transfer.  This transfer has many different smalls to use on multiple projects, and really pops on black paint.

I used the rectangular stick in the transfer tube to rub down the transfer.

The transfer has been applied.

I then decided to add a little gold to the edges of the urn and base with Rub 'n Buff Wax Metallic Finish in Antique Gold with my fingertip.

I rubbed on Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear using a fiber rag to seal the paint and transfer.

I love the urn in black.

I also made a second urn back in 2017 from these two finds.

That urn was painted with the same paints and sealed with the same poly, but never had any discoloration.  Here is it 4 years later.
