I found this vintage wooden, dovetailed case at our local thrift shop for
$2 last week. The only marking on the case was "Tower" and Sears
Roebuck & Co."
It was in fairly rough shape, and one of the hook latches was
missing.

Here is another view of the case.
This is the inside of the case.
Since there were a lot of paint specks inside the case, and because of the
partitions inside, I think it is a vintage artist's box.
I cleaned the box with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag, and sanded
a few of the larger paint globs. My rag was very reddish so I knew the
stain would bleed through a light colored paint with a primer or
Dixie Belle Boss.
I decided to paint the box with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Caviar. Dixie Belle's website states that "Caviar is a true, matte black. This rich color exudes elegance and can be paired with any paint color
or style. The muted finish will add a soft and chic feel to your space. Whether you
use Caviar in abundance or in moderation, this versatile color conveys a
sense of sophistication".
I brushed on two coats of paint inside the box and outside.
I lightly distressed the edges of the case with 220 grit sandpaper.
I have used several of these designs on other black projects.
This rose transfer fit the top of the box quite well.
I rubbed the transfer on the box top using the enclosed rectangular
stick.
Another of the Gilded Home & Nature transfers fit the inside lid of the
box.
I also added a few white transfer scraps from Maisie & Willow Delightful Labels transfer.
I waxed the case with
Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear.
I dabbed Antique Gold Rub n Buff on the metal parts of the
case using a Q tip.
The little case can be displayed three different ways. Horizontally.
Vertically.
And open, filled with mini collectibles!
A sweet little find with a classy makeover!
Thanks for visiting!

I love what you did with the artist's box, Carlene. I have one that belonged to my mother which I think would look great with a similar treatment. Her name was Rose so I think the floral transfer would be quite appropriate. Maybe that is my next project!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Naomi! That would be perfect!
