From Primitive Country Kitchen Shelf to Modern Farmhouse

April 21, 2022

Last month, I had to move my mom from her assisted living one bedroom apartment to a nursing home.   She is 90 now, and needs more care with her advancing dementia.

This burgundy primitive country style shelf was hanging over her sink with vintage ceramic roosters.  I have always thought it was cute but I just don't decorate with burgundy anymore.

This is a manufactured country decor piece made in China. The utensils are faux (but pretty darn realistic).

First the utensils were all unscrewed and remover from the shelf, and I then brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Caviar.

I decided not to distress the shelf, and leave it in more of a modern farmhouse style.  I waxed the shelf with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear.

The utensils and handles were screwed back into the shelf.

I like the new look!

Just think of all the stuff you can rescue from thrift stores with a little chalk paint!
