Junk Garden Plantings & Vignettes On The Corner Of The Deck
May 25, 2022
I finally got to start planting my summer annuals, just a little bit before Memorial Day.
I started on this corner of my deck with galvanized planters, annuals and other fun junk! I like to layer my junk.
My double decker scrub bucket has a Calliope Dark Red Geranium, and the bottom level has two MiniFamous Neo Double Deep Yellow Calibrachoas.

In this galvanized fluted garbage can bucket, I planted three TowerPower Yellow Black Eyed Susan Vines (Thunbergia). My garden stake, adjustable trellis is from Amazon.
My old window frame and sill, which has graced the mantel at Christmas, hung over the potting bench and sat on an old garden table, was placed on deck next to the garbage can planter.
I made the lid sign several years ago for a different garden project. I planted the galvanized window box with red verbena plants.
Another scrub bucket was filled with Sunsatia Cranberry Red Nemesia.
Nemesia is one of my favorite underused annuals, in a world of petunias, geraniums and million bells.
I have placed a red window screen behind these two buckets for "layering" and additional interest. Small nails hold the screen in place on the railing cross brace.
Here four brown, rectangular screens are layered as a backdrop.
I can't wait until the plants fill in.
Previous year's plantings in this corner:
Last year I moved the horizonal barrel to this corner and huddled galvanized buckets around it with mostly pink annuals.
I love nasturiums, but they grow fast, and here got out of hand here until I trimmed them and confined them in obelisks.
Here, I whitewashed an old bench and displayed watering cans and pink annuals.
This is the year I fell in love with red nemesia. I planted them with both lobelia and yellow lantana. Black eyed Susan vines were in the center.
It took until almost August to get these Heavenly Blue morning glories blooming so I never did this again!
Thanks for visiting another year's junk garden!

Love it, Carlene. I am thinking about and planning a "junk garden" but haven't started it yet. Hopefully by Fall so it's ready for next Spring. Thanks for sharing yours.
