Painted & Stenciled Galvanized Bucket Planters

Back in 2018, I stenciled these two bucket planters with roosters in a blog post HERE.

Today, I gave them a bright new summer makeover!

Several years before the rooster stencils were added to the buckets, I had white washed the buckets with watered down Rustoleum Heirloom White paint.

After scrubbing the buckets down with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag, I brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Colonel Mustard.

In the past, my thinking was leave the galvanized tubs and buckets plain, that the annuals would provide all the color.  But, this year, I decided to spice things up a bit with pops of Colonel Mustard here and there.

I found this farmhouse stencil at Dollar Tree recently.  I think its perfect for a bucket front!

I taped the stencil onto the front of one of the buckets, and pounced on the stencil using and acrylic paint, Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

Measure with a ruler to center the stencil.

Here is one of my buckets with the Dollar Tree stencil.

I took the buckets outdoors and sprayed on three coats of Painter's Touch Clear Matte Sealer.

These four annuals were chosen for planting in the buckets.

I ended up going with three plants, and excluding the orange calendula.

Of course, there is a lot of filling in to do!

All of my galvanized planters have holes drilled in the bottoms.

A very long winter, with lots of snow, has slowed down flower gardening this year. The temperatures stay cool as well.  This is the extent of annuals purchased this season so far.

  1. Those turned out really well, Carlene! Although I wouldn't have tho't of painting them yellow--not a go-to color for me--I do love the way they look with the orangey and yellowy flowers in them. I might have to reconsider my aversion to yellow! And the stencil is just the right touch.

    1. I'm not really a yellow person either but I am going with a Sunflower Themed summer garden & patio this year. The mustard color really works with sunflowers. Thanks Naomi!
