A Flag Stool Makeover & Other Patriotic Decor Ideas
June 19, 2022
This plain wooden stool was a Goodwill find from last summer. As I am joining a patriotic decor blog party with my friends in the Thrift Store Decor Team, I gave the stool a flag makeover.

After washing down the stool, and giving it a light scuff sanding with 220 sandpaper, I painted just the top with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Gravel Road.
Next, I pulled out my new Penny Tile stencil from Old Sign Stencils. Penny Tile is a two part stencil, that joins several other fun new pattern stencils from Old Sign Stencils including Farmhouse Quilt, Retro Star, Retro Star Large, Penny Tile, Barn Quilt Star, Pallet Stamps, Stitches, and Cable Knit.
*Old Sign Stencils has provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.
I then laid the penny tile stencil over a sheet of tissue paper and tried to diagram a US flag.
I then centered and taped the stencil onto stool top.
I laid the tissue paper flag on top of the stencil.
I marked blue squares with blue chalk.
Then, I pounced on the red stripes using Fusion Mineral Paint in Fort York Red, the white stripes with Fusion in Raw Silk, and Dixie Belle Bunker Hill Blue.
I thought that Bunker Hill Blue turned out too dark with my Gravel Road (grout lines).
I pounced over the dark blue tiles with Decoart Ceramcoat in Fountain Blue, I was much happier with this shade of blue.
I then used my Mini Christmas Stars stencil from Old Sign Stencils to add little stars to the blue tiles. I really liked the addition of the stars.
I stenciled the remaining top of the stool with more tiles to frame out the flag pattern. I used Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Caviar.
The rest of the stool was also painted in Caviar, and I sealed the paint and stencils with Painter's Touch Clear Matte Spray.
I applied two coats, but if it were to used outdoors I would spray the stool with several more coats.
I really like the way my little stool turned out.
If you like Americana decor, the stool could be used all year long.
I think I will have to try this stencil out again, now that I have the hang of it.
Pin for later!
