Repurposed & Upcycled Outdoor Flower Planter Makeovers
June 02, 2022
My church and gardening friend, Huntz, gave me this old cast iron spittoon at the end of last summer.
The old spittoon was originally from the local Courthouse, where his father was the janitor many years ago. Huntz said it was his job to help his dad empty the Courthouse spittoons.
Huntz had already painted the cast iron part of the spittoon and put drainage holes in the bottom for plants, so I will just be giving it a makeover.

The top rim of the spittoon is actually enamelware.
After removing any flaking paint and cleaning up the spittoon, I spray painted it with Krylon Outdoor Decor Sunflower Spray Paint.
I loved the color Sunflower, but I found the spray paint didn't cover the blue spittoon very well at all.
I ended up painting the spittoon with a couple coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Colonel Mustard. The Colonel Mustard paint color is very close to the spray paint color "Sunflower".
Next I pulled out Country Floral Love adhesive stencil from Hobby Lobby. I have used this stencil before on old iron utensils HERE.
I taped the stencil in a few spots with blue painter's tape to hold it better and to make stenciling easier where the stencil's cuts were close to the edge.
I pounced on the stencil using Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk.
I sprayed the finished spittoon with several coats of Painter's Touch Clear Matte Sealer.
I planted my spittoon planter with a Plumosa Fern.
I will be placing the planter on my Sunflower themed covered patio this summer.
I love how my spittoon turned out!
