Goodwill Storage/Blanket Chest Makeover
November 21, 2022
I found this wooden chest last fall at a Goodwill in the Twin Cities. I think I paid $14.99.
It appears to be be a homemade chest in very good condition.

Here is the inside.
I wanted to use the chest to store some of blogging supplies, so I chose to paint it with a neutral color to coordinate with my decor in the den. I chose a dark color paint so all the knots do not bleed through a light shade of paint.
I sanded the exterior of the chest with 220 grit sandpaper to rough up the smooth shiny finish. Then I washed the chest down with hot Dawn Dish soapy water and a rag.
Here I applied Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Midnight Sky.
Dixie Belle's website shares this about Midnight Sky: Midnight Sky is a dark blue black. You’ll see this calming color when you take a look through a telescope at night. Whether your style is modern or rustic, Midnight Sky will make your space feel more grounded. Use this dramatic color to add dimension to your painted project. This is the perfect furniture paint for chalk painting your furniture, cabinets or any DIY project.
I recently used this color on my bedroom furniture HERE.
I added a new Cable Knit stencil from Old Sign Stencils to the front of my chest. Don't you love cable knit blankets and sweaters?
I thought this stencil would be great to use for a fabric or blanket/throw storage chest.

I centered the stencil with a ruler and taped it in place with blue painter's tape.
I chose to pounce Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk onto the stencil. Swirling the stencil didn't work very well due to the slatted design of the chest. Pouncing worked out great!
I moved the stencil from side to side, re-aligned it, and finished stenciling to the ends.
After finishing the stenciling, I waxed the chest with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax.
I usually apply the wax with the lint free cloth and a wax brush too.
Here is my finished chest in place in the den.

The chest would look cute with a cable knit throw folded on top of the lid!
The stool was one of my recent projects HERE.
