Thrifted Mini Sled Makeover Ideas
December 12, 2022
I found this wooden red sled recently for $4 at a local consignment shop.
I think it was probably stenciled back in the 1980's or early 90's by the font used.

I didn't need to sand the whole sled but I did sand the stenciling to knock down the stenciling a bit with sandpaper.
After wiping the sled down with a rag and hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water, I brushed on a couple of coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Caviar.
Caviar is a great black chalk paint that I use on projects all the time.
Next, I pulled out my Retro Star Stencil from Old Sign Stencils, centered two rows of stars on the sled top, and taped it on with blue painters tape.
From Old Sign Stencils - Retro Star FJ111 is a repeating, reusable star pattern stencil that mimics the popular vintage star tiles! The bonus is, this star pattern is scaled smaller, so you can get the vintage star look on any sized project desired.
This retro pattern star stencil includes large and small retro stars.
Measurements:
- 10" x 10" overall
- large stars: 4" / small stars: 2"
What you get:
Retro Star is a 1-piece stencil.
- Project photos are for inspirational purposes only. No other supplies are included with this stencil.
How to extend pattern:
- Start by stenciling the pattern in the middle of your project.
- To extend pattern, overlap like-minded graphics along any edge to continue.
Stencil Features:
- made with reusable, high quality 10 mil mylar
- added registration marks for easy positioning
*Old Sign Stencils has provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.
I swirled on the retro star stencil using Rustoleum Metallic Gold Paint in Soft Gold, and waxed the sled with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear.
I replaced the leather hanger with a jute twine one.
I also added a little wreath (candle ring) with a small nail.
I think the sled coordinates perfectly with my black sleigh makeover.
