A Winter Farmhouse Kitchen Refresh On A Budget
January 22, 2023
My kitchen needed a fresh coat of paint so badly! The old paint color was a little too almond colored, the ceiling was green, and I had painted a section of chalkboard above a corner shelf.
I hope you can read on and see my small, farmhouse kitchen get refreshed on a shoestring budget!

This wall, with the cutting boards, shutter, and stepstool is not only my favorite, but it's also my guests' favorite as well.
Not much was changed here. The wall color is now Dover White (a Sherwin Williams paint color.) I love this color and have been painting all my inside walls this color.
I also removed the television set that hung on this wall. I always had a kitchen television set since my kids were young. I never wanted eating in the living room, so a kitchen TV solved the problem. The first TV sat in the corner on a microwave cart.
I always tried to photograph my kitchen without the TV, and it was almost impossible!
I still have my antique oak table in the kitchen with two oak and just one painted chairs.
The chair seats were painted and stenciled with buffalo checks in a blog post HERE. One of the chairs, now in another room, can be stuffed in by the little radiator if needed.
I took down my buffalo check stenciled dishtowel valances, and opted to leave the windows more open. There are pleated blinds on the windows and door.
This little radiator has a wooden board on top so I can display vintage kitchen items on it.
Two of my projects hang here between the door and the window, first a drawer front painted and distressed with vintage utensils, and a cutting board wall shelf.
A slaw cutter with a magnet displays a photo of my grandparents.
My house was built in 1954, and in 1991, I remodeled the kitchen with new birch cabinets, a white laminate countertop, a ceramic tile backsplash and white appliances.
I kept the colors neutral so it would stay in style longer but of course it's dated 30 years later.
I painted an over the sink shelf in off white chalk paint several years ago to display collectibles and hold my butter churn paper towel holder.
Another view of the kitchen. The only appliance that has not been replaced from the 1991 remodel was this drop-in Kitchen Aid range.
I don't have a lot of cabinets, but luckily the laundry room next to the kitchen has lots of cabinets for pantry and small appliance storage.
The door with the chairback shelf project is the entrance to the laundry room.
The stenciled rolling pin was a past project on my blog HERE, and the slaw cutter shelf with legs was repurposed HERE.
A close up of the corner shelf top with vintage enamelware, cutting boards, a grater, and a stenciled crock number project HERE.
Above the kitchen corner shelf is my rolling pin shutter display project HERE, and the EAT plates and upcycled plate shelf HERE.
I have a nice collection of vintage bowls that fit perfectly in the corner shelf.
I updated my jadeite cabinet door pulls with more modern matte black ones from Menards.
And finally, the only ceiling in my house with popcorn (an HGTV no no) is in the kitchen that was remodeled in 1991. The ceiling got painted two weeks ago, but I hesitated to make a mess removing the popcorn!
I did get a new rustic matte black semi-flush ceiling light at Home Depot.
Thanks for visiting my little farmhouse kitchen.
