Goodwill Hinged Wooden Box Botanical Makeover
February 12, 2023
This wooden hinged box was a great Goodwill find.
I paid $5.99 for it in the Twin Cities. It's a perfect find for a makeover.

I took the hinges off the box and cleaned it with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag.
Because I planned to paint the box with a white chalk paint, I first brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle's Boss. I'm not sure if the wood stain would bleed through or not, but I didn't want to take the chance.
Dixie Belle's Website says "In two coats, BOSS tackles tough set in stains including permanent marker, water stains, and much more. BOSS even masks smoke odors and nicotine smells.
Clean first with White Lightning and then apply BOSS. Allow to dry approximately one hour. Apply a second coat of BOSS and allow to dry for 24 hours before painting with Dixie Belle Paint".
I use it most for wood stain bleed through with light colored paints.
I then painted the box with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Fluff.
Dixie Belle says "Fluff is a serene, soft white with a slight gray undertone. Use Fluff for traditional or modern style projects."
I found this rub on transfer at Dollar Tree for $1.25. I purchased two of them.
I used this section of the transfer for the top of the lid and for the inside of the lid too.
I cut out some of the transfer's graphics for the front of the box, and rubbed them on with a flat rectangular stick (mine was from a Redesign with Prima product). You could use a popsicle stick or paint stick as well.
I used my finger to add Rub N Buff in Antique Gold on the hinges to brighten them up.
I ended up using nine gardening graphics on the front of my box.
The box stays open on its own so well that I thought adding the graphics to the lid would be a great addition for a garden vignette idea.
I waxed the box inside and out with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear. You can apply the wax with a brush or lint free rag or both.
The box is really cute as a garden vignette display with faux plants, figurines, and garden supplies.
Seed packets would fit in the box too!
If you want to try rub on transfers, check out Dollar Tree's transfers!
They are inexpensive, and work well on small projects.

So cute, Carlene. I've never worked with transfers and am glad to know that Dollar Tree has them so I can try them without spending much money. Thanks for the info. Gotta find me a box to decorate!
